JACKSONVILLE, FL (August 1, 2022) - An Excelsior Security Agency (ESA) officer on patrol at a motel in Orange Park saved the life of a victim that had overdosed on an opioid narcotic. The officer was dispatched to the man’s room for an unrelated issue and found the man on the bed unconscious. The officer radioed his dispatch to start paramedics, then he started CPR. The victim then started taking shallow breaths, and due to his training, the officer realized this may be an overdose and proceeded to administer a dose of the emergency medication naloxone (aka Narcan). Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can reverse an overdose from opioids, including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid medications.

All Excelsior officers carry naloxone, and this officer’s use of it quickly reversed the effects of the unknown opioids; it is effective, usually restoring normal breathing within 2 to 3 minutes. After an initial dose of the medication, the victim started to breath and was soon after treated and transported to the hospital by the fire department. “We commend and are very proud of our officer who demonstrated leadership by taking swift action which prevented a tragic outcome” said Sean Saunders, COO of Excelsior.

Local public safety agencies, provide their officers with naloxone to be utilized in circumstances such as this. Excelsior Security Agency adopted the national trend to issue this medication to their officers after data from the Centers from Disease Control (CDC) concluded all first responders are likely to come into contact with persons who use a mixture of illicit drugs during routine job duties—and because naloxone has been demonstrated on such a high level to prevent deaths. Excelsior partners with Jacksonville’s Critical Awareness, a leading training institute to provide its officers with this life saving training and equipment.

Excelsior Security Agency (ESA) is Jacksonville and northeast Florida’s largest privately-owned security provider, offering armed, unarmed and fire watch services. ESA provides superior security and public safety services throughout Florida and Georgia, and soon in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee. (Florida License No. B-1900260)
