JACKSONVILLE, FL (September 12, 2022) - Excelsior Security Agency (ESA), Jacksonville’s largest privately-owned security agency responded last night to a shooting on Jacksonville’s Westside. The initial call came into ESA's dispatch and while the call taker was on the line, they heard multiple additional shots being fired in the background. The reporting party was management of an apartment complex that ESA provides contracted armed security services for. The shooting was reported in the Hillcrest Area; the initial report was that shots were fired toward an apartment complex from Labelle Street near Hollycrest Drive, and this sent residents in the area running for cover.

ESA immediately dispatched a total of seven patrol officers who quickly arrived on scene. Witness told the initial arriving ESA officers that several people had fired shots. Scott Alfassa, ESA’s Public Affairs Officer responded to the scene, he said, “Our officers established an initial command post for our incoming patrol officers and helped maintain a perimeter, protecting any potential evidence at the crime scene.” It was later learned that while the incident was still unfolding, a black male approximately 25 years old that was believed to have been shot in this incident walked into UF Health Shands emergency room where he soon after died of his injuries.

Multiple bullet casings were located on the street, and there were reports that a possible shooter ran into a nearby apartment. Sean Saunders, ESA’s COO was the commanding officer on scene, he said, “Our team assisted the JSO [Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office] with incident support, helping to maintain the perimeter from traffic and pedestrian onlookers and residents who wanted to enter the area, but could not due to both the potential of continued danger as well as helping to keep any forensic evidence within the crime scene safe from contamination.”

ESA worked with both the apartment management and the JSO Task Force which eventually made entry into an apartment but were unable to locate any individuals possibly involved in the incident. ESA received the initial call for service at 5:20pm and all ESA’s officers cleared the scene at 9:30pm; at the time, JSO detectives were still on-scene investigating further.

With the recent spike in violent crimes associated with drug activity and gangs in Jacksonville and the surrounding areas, ESA is proud to be a force multiplier to local law enforcement agencies that are vigorously working to focus on these crimes.
